Adaptive Driving Ecosystem

Same seat.
Two drivers.
No tools.

The adaptive driving industry makes you choose: modify the vehicle for the disabled driver, or leave it usable for everybody else. EZ Cruise refuses the trade. One dial moves the whole system between them — in seconds, with nothing removed and nothing left behind.

Who can drive it right now
Anyone. Factory steering feel.

100% of your own input reaches the column.
What changed on the vehicle
Nothing. The dial is the only thing that moved.
The problem

Adapting a car is a zero-sum game. We built the system that isn't.

To give a disabled driver control, the standard approach tears out the factory steering column and replaces it with a permanently modified low-resistance one. It is expensive, it rules out older and cheaper vehicles, and it permanently ruins the steering feel for everyone else who drives that car.

Industry standard $10,000–$15,000

Factory column removed and replaced. Permanent. Tied to one vehicle, and effectively to one driver.

EZ Cruise Bolt-on. Reversible.

Mounts at existing interfaces without removing factory components — and moves with you to the next vehicle you own.

Mechanical Transparency is the standard the whole ecosystem is built to: an adaptive driver gets full, independent, high-level control, and an able-bodied driver can sit in the exact same seat and drive with factory feel — with zero tools and zero modifications between them.

The ecosystem

Five subsystems. Each one independently filed.

They are parallel, not sequential — a driver takes only the pieces their body and their vehicle actually call for.

EZ Puck

Steering

A compact modular adapter that bolts between the steering wheel and the column — no factory components removed. Inside is a single-stage hypocycloid cycloidal gear reduction: 30 machined lobes on a dual-disc assembly against 31 stationary pins.

Cycloidal rather than planetary for a reason. Planetary gearing concentrates load on a few teeth and is prone to backlash under shock. The cycloidal drive keeps roughly half its lobes in contact at once, so it absorbs impact well beyond its continuous rating while staying backdrivable — the wheel still self-centers.

A central stationary tube lets the mechanism rotate around the factory clockspring and SRS harness. Airbags, horn and wheel controls keep working — which most aftermarket steering hubs cannot say.

  • 30:1 max reduction
  • 1:1 → 30:1 driver-adjustable
  • 30.5 mm hollow bore, SRS pass-through
  • 180° dual-disc phase offset
  • Interchangeable spline yokes — GM 36 · GM 48 · Double D · metric UTV

EZ Lever
EZ Lever Pro

Throttle & brake

Mounted outside the cockpit, on the driver-side frame rail. Conventional hand controls crowd the seat well — the exact space a wheelchair transfer needs. This one isn't in there at all.

The L-shape is assembled, not bent: a permanent under-chassis manifold plus a detachable vertical arm that drops in and locks with a downward push. The geometry means driving forces tighten the clamp rather than loosen it. A pull-loop routed into the cockpit ejects the arm and leaves the seat completely open.

Push forward for gas, pull back for brake — a short, ergonomic arm throw translated by an offset progressive cam into a full-length cable pull, so a driver with limited reach can still reach 100% throttle.

The Mountain Peak emergency brake is built into the manifold as pure geometry — a ramp, a lip and an anchor post. Pull deep into the braking arc and the lever climbs, steps sideways and locks. It holds with zero held operator force, and one lateral tug across the lap releases it. No electronics, no power.

The slotted clevis is how the pedals stay shared: a dead-band in the manifold lets the factory pedals travel freely without moving the hand control, and lets the hand control actuate without moving the pedals.

  • 3:1 cam leverage
  • 20° arm throw → 100 mm cable pull
  • 15° forward-rake neutral bias
  • Zero electronics
  • Cockpit clears 100% for transfers

EZ Guard

Spasticity safety

This one exists because of something that happened on the road. Drivers with cervical and thoracic spinal cord injuries get involuntary leg spasms, often set off by road vibration. On hand controls, a spasm can drive a foot straight down onto the gas or the brake — a conflicting input at speed, from a limb the driver has no way to stop.

The answer is a floor-mounted, dual-state occlusion plate with no electronics, no power, and no modification to the factory pedals. Stowed, it lies flat against the floor pan and an able-bodied driver steps over it without knowing it's there. Raised and latched upright, it physically intercepts the foot and grounds the force into the chassis.

Critically, the raised plate never touches the pedals — it holds a clearance gap, so intercepted spastic force can't actuate the vehicle by pressing the plate against a pedal face.

  • < 0.5 in stowed profile
  • 15 mm non-contact pedal clearance
  • Engineered to 1,800 N dynamic impact
  • Zero power · Zero electronics

EZ Access

Entry

A modular accessible entry gate for open tube-frame vehicles. using an internal sleeve interface. Getting into the vehicle is the first barrier and the one most often left unsolved — the seat is useless if the frame rail is in the way.

Where it came from
Every one of these started as a failure I couldn't accept. Terrell M. Woods · Founder & Inventor

On October 25, 2006, at fifteen years old, Terrell Woods sustained a C4–C5 spinal cord injury in an accident after football practice at Millington Central High School. He has driven, built and run a business from a wheelchair ever since.

He bought an off-road go-kart and was told adaptive hand controls weren't technically feasible for that platform. He designed the complete EZ Lever in a single session, then the EZ Puck.

EZ Guard came later, and it came the hard way — a leg spasm during prototype testing caused an acceleration he hadn't asked for. Until that mechanism existed, the only thing standing between him and his own leg was a rope tied between the frame rails.

Engineering drawings for the first provisional were produced in collaboration with a University of Memphis biomechanical engineer. Rehabilitation: Shepherd Center.

Honest development status

EZ Cruise is at prototype and patent-pending stage. It is not yet available for purchase and is not certified for on-road use. Provisional applications establish priority; they are not granted patents.

Validation work ahead includes bench and destructive testing against FMVSS 203 and 204, and clinical ergonomic review by a licensed occupational therapist. As an aftermarket system, installation is intended to be performed by NMEDA-certified modifiers under the applicable federal exemptions.

The commercial design intent is to price within standard state Vocational Rehabilitation and VA adaptive-equipment allowances, so that a qualifying driver's out-of-pocket cost is as close to nothing as the programs permit. Coverage is determined by those agencies, not by us.

How it gets paid for

The equipment is priced to fit inside the money that already exists.

The reason a $15,000 column tear-out stays out of reach isn't only the price — it's that the money to cover it is scattered across a dozen programs nobody hands you a list of. So here is the list. Every program below was checked against its own official source in July 2026.

This is not advice and it is not a promise of coverage. Eligibility and amounts are decided by these agencies, not by us. Start with a counselor.

Start here — almost everything runs through these two

Vocational Rehabilitation is the single largest door for a working-age driver, and the driver evaluation is the key that opens it. Do these in this order.

Tennessee Vocational Rehabilitation

TN Dept. of Human Services · Division of Rehabilitation Services No published cap
Who
A disability that's a real barrier to employment, and you need help to get or keep a job. If you receive SSI or SSDI you are presumed eligible — bring your award letter.
Pays for
Vehicle modification and adaptive driving equipment are explicitly authorized by state rule, plus the driver evaluation and training.
Start
Self-referral is allowed. Call (833) 751-0597. Shelby County is Region 9 — 40 South Main Street, 10th Floor, Memphis.

Driver Rehabilitation Evaluation (CDRS)

Certified specialists · ADED credential Ask VR to fund it
Who
Anyone seeking adaptive controls. There is effectively no way to get VR to fund equipment without this evaluation on file.
What
A clinical assessment plus a behind-the-wheel session in a vehicle already fitted with controls, producing a written prescription for exactly what you need.
Start
Find a provider through ADED's search.
Do not pay for this yourself if you're going the VR route. Assessment services are exempt from any financial needs test under federal rule — ask your counselor to authorize and fund it. Private insurance and Medicare generally will not.

IRS medical expense deduction

IRS Publication 502 · Schedule A Situational
What
Pub 502 says it directly: "the cost of special hand controls and other special equipment installed in a car for the use of a person with a disability" is includible, as is the difference between a regular car and one built to hold a wheelchair.
Catch
Only the portion above 7.5% of your income, only if you itemize, and only on money you paid — not what a grant covered.
Straight talk: for most people living on SSDI or SSI this one is worth $0. It only becomes real in a year with substantial taxable income.

How this list was built

Every program above was researched and then independently fact-checked against its own official source — statute, agency page, IRS publication or the program's own application page — in July 2026. Dollar figures come from primary sources, and where the internet is circulating a wrong number we say so.

Programs we could not confirm are not on this page. A wrong number or a dead link here costs somebody months they don't have. Several Tennessee Medicaid waiver services, one manufacturer program and two nonprofit grants are still being verified and will be added when they're solid.

Partner · Invest · License

The seatbelt of accessibility doesn't get built alone.

We're looking for distributors, licensing partners, NMEDA modifiers, clinical evaluators, and grant organizations who want adaptive equipment that a family can actually afford and actually move to the next vehicle.
